Indian Railways is the world’s third, and Asia’s longest railway network which means that it is a complicated network of trains and railway tracks. But apart from being complicated, Indian Railway is quite a sophisticated railway network as well. The intricate grid of railway tracks and umpteen number of trains offer a great convenience of being able to travel from one part of the country to another.
As per statistics, more than 2 crore people travel in Indian Railways trains every day. In fact, India’s geographical area is so large that it is almost next to impossible for a country like India to run a smooth transportation system without Indian Railways.
The railway network has a huge variety of trains ranging from passenger trains, express trains, Shatabdis, Rajdhanis and superfast trains. Apart from the large variation of trains, Indian Railways has diversity in railway stations as well.
Have you ever noticed the words “Junction”, “Central” and “Terminal” after the names of railway stations? These are not randomly put, and have a very specific meaning.
Can you guess what these words at the end of the names of railway stations could denote? Once you know the interesting reason behind the usage of these words, you will surely pay attention to them the next time you travel in any train of Indian Railways.
If any railway station has “Terminal” or “Terminus” in its name, it means that there is no railway track beyond that station and train will go back in the direction where it has come from. At present, 27 stations of Indian Railways have “Terminal” or “Terminus” in their names, the biggest of them being Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus.
If the word “Central” is written at the end of a railway station’s name, it implies that the city has more than one railway station. And, the one which has “Central” at the end of its name is the oldest and/or the busiest railway station of the city.
If a railway station has “Junction” in its name, it means that it has 3 or more than 3 routes for trains to enter and exit, i.e. trains of different routes pass through that station. Some of the biggest Junction stations in India are Mathura Junction (7 routes), Salem Junction (6 routes), Vijayawada Junction (5 routes) and Bareilly Junction (5 routes).
