He is back. The 12-year-old boy who was kidnapped from New Delhi’s Seemapuri area in 2010 and taken to Bangladesh was reunited with his family on June 30 in India.

Swaraj had on Tuesday announced Sonu’s impending return on Twitter.
For the last two days, Sonu was with the Indian Embassy officials in Bangladesh. Swaraj herself met Sonu upon his return.
According to reports, Sonu was kidnapped six years ago and taken to Bangladesh’s Jessore by a woman. There he was ill-treated but was able to tell Jamal of his plight.

Jamal then started his campaign to reunite Sonu with his parents. Though he had told the police in Bangladesh about Sonu’s kidnapping from Delhi, the police put him behind bars for a month.
Yet Jamal did not give up. He got Sonu out of the clutches of his kidnappers and placed him in a child home.

Jamal’s persistent efforts led to his meeting with Sonu’s mother Mumtaz on May 23, 2016 in Delhi.
She had filed an FIR immediately after Sonu’s kidnapping but three years of continuous search had yielded nothing.

A DNA test confirmed Sonu’s parentage and the Indian government immediately stepped in to ensure that the boy is brought back.

On Swaraj’s orders, a senior official of the Indian High Commission in Dhaka went to Jessore to meet Sonu in May.
