Subramanian Swamy is one of the senior-most leaders of the ruling Bhartiya Janta Party. Time and again, the politician hits the headlines for his statements, which sometimes also spark controversies. This has happened yet again as Swamy commented on India’s tensions with the Maldives. Last week, in a tweet, the Rajya Sabha member said that India should invade the Maldives if the September 23 Presidential elections are rigged.
The tweet by Swamy led to a massive controversy. You can read what Subramanian Swamy wrote in the tweet below:

After this tweet grabbed attention nationally and internationally, the Maldivian foreign office summoned Indian envoy Akhilesh Mishra. As per a report by the Indian Express, Maldives foreign secretary Ahmed Sareer expressed “displeasure” over Swamy’s tweet in his meeting with Indian High Commissioner Akhilesh Mishra.
However, according to a report by Maldives Independent, Sareer’s office has rubbished the reports of any such meeting between the two bureaucrats.
Reportedly, Maldives’ government also expressed shock at Subramanian Swamy’s statement in a demarche it submitted to the Indian government.
Meanwhile, the Indian government has distanced itself from Subramanian Swamy’s statement. In response to a query on Swamy’s tweet, Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said:
The opinion expressed by Dr Swamy in his tweet is personal. It does not reflect the views of the Government of India.
Despite the fact that Subramanian Swamy’s tweet created a huge fuss and also affected India’s ties with the Maldives, the politician is determined that the centre should invade the country if the Indians living there are affected because of the rigging of elections.

A report by Zee News quotes him saying:
Indian citizens in the Maldives can’t be ill-treated. It’s my opinion that India has the responsibility to protect its citizens for which invasion is necessary.
