Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has expressed shock over the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in an encounter in Kashmir and deplored “excessive” force used against civilians in the latest wave of violence in the Valley.

Expressing concern over the detention of Kashmiri separatist leaders, Sharif said India should fulfil its human rights obligations as well as its commitments under the United Nations Security Council resolutions.
However, this has elicited a strong reaction from Union minister Kiren Rijiju who said that Pakistan should worry more about such violations in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) than the Valley.

“They (Pakistan) should worry (more) about human rights violations in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir than Jammu and Kashmir. Kashmir is an internal matter of India,” he said.
Meanwhile, the toll from the last two days of violence in the Valley climbed to 23 with six killings, including that of a policeman, and six people, including a teenage girl, dying of injuries sustained in clashes.
